Man and 10-year-old boy are killed in freak accident as a massive gum tree falls and slams into their moving car

  • A man, 46, and a boy died after a tree fell onto their car in Melbourne's outer east
  • The accident took place along Monbulk Road in Sherbrooke on Sunday evening
  • The victims are yet to be identified, but are believed to be from a nearby area   

A man and a 10-year-old boy have been killed after a gum tree fell onto their moving car. 

The freak accident happened as the pair travelled along Monbulk Road in Melbourne's outer east on Sunday around 5.30pm.

Officers were investigating whether the wet weather played any part in the accident.

Police were yet to confirm the pair's identities but it's believed they came from Cockatoo, a suburb about 20km from the accident site.

Around 30 millimetres of rain fell in the Dandenong Ranges in the previous 24 hours. 

The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a warning for damaging winds in parts of Victoria on Sunday, but Sherbrook was not included in the warning area. 

SES were called to more than 150 incidents in the 24 hours to 6.30am on Monday. 

Police were preparing a report for the coroner.
