THE PLANETS
★★★
7.40pm, ABC
You can’t not love rock star astrophysicist Brian Cox. (Seriously, I think it’s been legislated.) But this new series isn’t his greatest work. Over five episodes we look at each of the planets in our solar system in detail (tonight, it’s Earth and Mars) but while there’s plenty of good content, the pace is unfortunately glacial. A co-production with Open University, you get the sense this was made with furious note-taking in mind. As entertainment, it’s not quite there.
HARROW
Season final ★★★
8.40pm, ABC
Harrow is the kind of show you want to enjoy: made in Australia, gorgeous Brisbane locations, terrific cast including Darren Gilshenan and Robyn Malcolm. Not to mention the considerable X-factor of Ioan Gruffudd in the title role. But somehow it always ends up being that little bit less than the sum of its parts. That hasn’t stopped it earning two seasons, however, the second of which comes to a close tonight with the long-awaited showdown between Daniel Harrow and his nemesis, Chester.
FBI
Season final ★★★
9.30pm, Ten
Missy Peregrym’s permanently creased brow does overtime in this season finale, when a colleague’s husband – also an FBI agent – is killed in the line of duty. As always – while it may never get our heart rate up – this is a really polished police procedural that ticks all the boxes without ever feeling manipulative or lazy. It also has a really nice multicultural cast – overtly, in Peregrym’s co-star, Zeeka Zaki – but also in the varied ensemble and assorted cameos.
