PUNE: Weak monsoon conditions are likely to affect 60-65 % of the state till July 17, which is expected to impact Kharif sowing in some districts of Marathwada and
Vidarbha.
Till recently, Kharif sowing in the state has been around 29% less than the same period last year.
Rainfall is also likely to elude most districts in the state, especially those in west Madhya
Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada, for the next 4-5 days,
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Officials said the country as a whole may also see slightly below-normal rainfall during this period.
Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather at IMD Pune, told TOI that they were not calling the current lull as a “break”, as monsoon had yet to cover the entire country. “This ‘weak phase of monsoon’ condition may continue over major parts of the country, including 60-65% of Maharashtra, till July 17,” he said.
Kashyapi said only
Konkan and eastern parts of Madhya Maharashtra, excluding Pune, may get good rainfall in this period. “The rest of the state can only expect light rains at isolated places during this period,” said Kashyapi, adding, “Over the rest of the country, monsoon may remain weak till around July 17.”
Monsoon’s further progress may also only happen after July 17-18, said Kashyapi.
Pulak Guhathakurta, head of climate application and user interface at IMD Pune, said 21 districts of in the state will be moderately to extremely dry till July 17, while 11 will be severely to extremely dry.
An agriculture department official said the lull could prove an advantage in regions where it rained considerably in the past few days. “However, in Marathwada and Vidarbha, sowing could be affected,” the official said.
“When it rained for a couple of days in June, farmers did some of their sowing. It didn’t rain since. The current lull in monsoon may further affect sowing,” Vishal Kamble, a Beed farmer, said.
