RAJKOT: Carcass of a
lioness was found in Gir East forest division in Amreli district on Saturday morning. However, the cause of death was not immediately known. This is the third lion death in past ten days, said forest officials.
According to forest officials, the lioness aged 6-7 years was found dead
in Dalkhania range’s Krangasa round near Govindpur revenue area.
The nails of the lioness were intact and there were no external injury mark found on the body. The carcass has been sent for postmortem.
Over the past 10 days two lions were
found dead — one in Hadana area of Dhari taluka and another in Jakhiya village of Gir Gadhda taluka.
When contacted chief conservator of forest (
wildlife) D T Vasavda said, “The exact cause of death will be known only after the postmortem report arrives. But we are sure that there was no poaching involved.”
He added, “The mortality rate naturally increases during the monsoon because of various infections. It is suspected that this lioness also died of some infection.”
