It’s Raining Bucks: Drivers Stop Their Cars, Pick Up Cash Dropped By Armored Truck

Earlier this week, dozens of drivers in Dekalb County, Georgia pulled over on an interstate and rushed onto the road to collect money left behind by an armored truck.

WSB TV Atlanta reports that, at approximately 8 p.m. last Tuesday, the side door of an armored truck opened along a stretch of the I-285 highway near Ashford-Dunwoody Road. The armored truck company believes about $175,000 was strewn across the roadway and motorists quickly jumped at the opportunity to make a quick buck.

Footage from the scene shows drivers pulling over and leaping out of their cars to collect cash in a scene which likely would have felt like a dream. While motorists probably (and rightfully…) thought it was a case of finders keepers, local police say they must return them on their own free will or face charges.

“Those people who do not return the money, we have video, we have tag numbers. We have footage of people on the interstate,” Dunwoody Sgt. Robert Parsons said. “What we’re asking the public to do is bring the money back. Don’t make us come looking for you, because if we do that, you probably will be charged.”

According to WSB TV Atlanta, at least six people had returned money to police as of Thursday morning. One good Samaritan, Randall Lewis, was generous enough to return $2,150 in cash he picked up from the road to police.

“Shout out to my mom and dad. They trained me really well. It looked like piles of leaves blowing in the wind. I could not believe my eyes that this was legit money,” Lewis said.
