Lajpat Rai Law College to get 1st girls’ hostel

SAMBALPUR: After five decades of its establishment, Lajpat Rai (LR) Law College, a constituent college of Sambalpur University, is set to get the first girls’ hostel on its campus.
The construction work of the hostel is being carried out by the public works department (PWD) at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore.
Principal Bijayananda Behera said, “The Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) had provided the fund for the construction of the hostel. The building of the hostel is ready now. It can accommodate 120 boarders.”
The college was established in 1965, two years before the establishment of Sambalpur University in 1967. The college was then under Utkal University.
The institution offers master of law, bachelor of law, a five-year integrated bachelor of business administration and bachelor of law and PG diploma in industrial relationship and personnel management. Around 500 students, comprising 55 per cent of girl students, are enrolled in different courses of the institution.

“Students from different parts of western Odisha study in this institution. However, without a hostel, the students, especially girls, faced a lot of difficulty. The problem will be resolved once the hostel becomes operational,” Behera said, adding that the PWD will hand over the hostel to the varsity soon.
But Behera expressed concern as they are yet to have quarters for a superintendent or warden of the hostel. “Initially, it might be difficult to manage the ladies’ hostel,” he said. Behera has urged the varsity administration to take steps in this regard.
