Coimbatore: Rather than taking the main Coimbatore-Nallampalayam Road,
the residents of Nallampalayam use other routes,
however congested,
to reach Mettupalayam Road,
thanks to its sorry state. The road was dug up for laying underground water supply lines to bring Athikadavu water six months ago. It has become a gravel surface with mounds of soil piled up on the sides.
The road has several engineering companies, a parking lot, a Tasmac bar and residential colonies along it. “The authorities have not relayed the road even after six months. They just filled the dug-up areas with mud and left a large portion of the dugout mud along the road, blocking half of it,” said Ashok Kumar, a mechanic. “Now, they have again dug up the entrance of the Mettupalayam Road to fix a leak.”
The road, which is more than 30ft wide, has shrunk because of the open drains on the sides, which emit foul smell. “They dug up the road thrice in the last six months but have not relaid it,” said A Vaiyapuri, a security guard with an engineering firm.
Trenches do not allow mini buses and school buses to reach their area, said residents of Indira Nagar, which is located just off the road. “School vans used to pick up our kids from the doorstep. Now, we have to reach the main road to drop and pick them up. What’s worse, we have to walk past a Tasmac bar,” said Radhika, a mother. “We can’t even walk when it rains, as the road becomes slippery.”
“Can’t the corporation officials co-ordinate with the agencies concerned and get the works done in two months and relay it properly?” asked Nisha, a mother of two.
