JAIPUR/ALWAR: The Bharatpur police on Friday
arrested the car driver who had mowed down six elderly persons in Kumher on Thursday early morning.
Additional SP (ASP) Mool Singh Rana said that the accused Parasram Meena, a native of neighbouring Alwar district was arrested. “The car was newly purchased and was gifted to the bride and groom on their wedding. Meena is bride’s uncle and was asked to safely deliver the car to the newly wed couple’s house,” Rana said.
The initial investigation has revealed that after attending the wedding on late Wednesday night, “The bride’s parents and other close relatives were busy in the wedding. So they gave keys to Parasram and asked him to take it to the bride’s house. He was speeding through the road and on Thursday early morning ploughed into elderly persons,” an official said, adding that the car’s registered owner is being interrogated.
The victims were identified as he six have been identified as Raghuveer Singh (62), Prem Chand (55), Narottam Lal (65), Makhan Lal (60) and Hariram (63), and Rameshwar (61).
The mishap had taken place on Dhanwada Road in Kumher town of the city where elderly residents of Naharganj gather in the morning for physical exercise. Locals told cops that every day, senior citizens would gather in the morning at 5am. “All of them (victims) were doing yoga when the vehicle had rammed into them,” said Prem Chand, a relative of one of the victims.
The police said that the
accident spot was a small pathway where elderly person had gathered for morning walks and yoga. The incident triggered protests in Kumher, additional force was called in to contain the law and order situation.
