AHMEDABAD: A 35-year-old man of the Dalit community in Rupal village of Bavla taluka in Ahmedabad district was assaulted by four persons, including two women, over a dispute about Rs 1,000.
The victim has been identified as Vinod Dabhi, 35, a daily wager, who is under treatment at Civil hospital in Asarwa.
Bavla police registered a case of attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, abetment in an offence along with charges under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Raju Thakor, Tanvir Thakor, Madhi Thakor, and Tanvir’s wife whose name has not been mentioned in the FIR.
According to the FIR filed by Vinod’s brother Jitendra, Raju along with the other accused asked Jitendra when he would pay Rs 1,000 that was due for spraying fertilizers in his farm. “When I told Raju that I had already paid Rs 1,000 to him, he became angry and began abusing me with casteist slurs,” said Jitendra.

Later, Raju along with other accused persons arrived with iron rods and sticks and started beating Jitendra. “When my brother Vinod tried to rescue me, the four persons started hitting him with sticks and rods,” said Jitendra. A doctor at the hospital said, “Vinod’s condition is critical and he is on the ventilator.”
Jitendra said Vinod and two other members of his family were assaulted by Thakor community members. “We have taken their tractor to spray fertilisers in our farm for which I had already paid Rs 1,000. On Thursday, Raju suddenly rushed to my garage and began asking for Rs 1,000 more. As I denied to pay any extra money, he got furious and attacked me and my family members,” Jitendra told TOI.
