Since exports and imports are taking place from the fishing harbour here immediate steps should be taken for improving sanitation and prevent emptying of drains into it, District Collector V. Vinay Chand said at a meeting on the remodelling of the fishing harbour here on Friday.
Immediate steps would be taken on the implementation of the ₹40 crore project after the visit of Special Chief Secretary Poonam Malakondaiah, the Collector said. He suggested to Municipal Commissioner G. Srijana that drains flowing into the sea at fishing harbour at one point should be diverted so as prevent its affecting the harbour. He said treatment plant would not have the capacity to handle it.
Mr. Vinay Chand said the Chief Minister would be apprised of the problems when he visited the district.
He instructed Joint Director, Fisheries, Koteswara Rao, to look into the issue of land used for repairs being given to the Port Trust and whether the land given in its lieu was taken possession of.
The issue of retrieving boats sunk in Hudhud cyclone should be taken to the notice of the Port Trust Chairman, he said.
Mr. Vinay Chand asked fishermen associations to appoint a representative to bring to the notice of officials concerned their day-to-day problems.
Deputy Director of MPEDA M. Shaji, AP Mechanised Fishing Boat Operators Association leader P.C. Appa Rao, B. Neelakantham (Coastal Mechanised Fishing Boats), GVMC Zone Commissioner Chittibabu were among those who participated.
‘Jetty inadequate’
Earlier, accompanied by Ms. Sujana, Mr. Vinay Chand visited the fishing harbour and the jetty there. Fishermen representatives said the number of boats increased from 150 at one time to 700 now and the jetty was not adequate. The roof of the sea export procurement shed was in a bad shape and sheets should be replaced, they said.
