PANCHKULA: Concerned over the accident rate and fatalities, the Municipal Corporation (MC)
Panchkula along with Haryana Vision Zero Team, in wee hours of Thursday night, conducted
intersection trial on two major
roads of the city - Sector 20 lights below flyover and Majri below flyover.
While sharing the information MC commissioner-cum-administrator, Rajesh Jogpal, said the two intersections were black spots of the city. In all, there are 24 black spots in Panchkula.
Meanwhile, an intersection trial at two locations in Rohtak, conducted by the Haryana Vision Zero Team, received a positive response from public.
When the Panchkula municipal corporation came to know about the success of intersection trial done in Rohtak they showed interest in conducting a similar trial here.
It was a combined effort of transport, National Highways Authority of India and police which made the trial possible in Panchkula. Municipal Commissioner, Rajesh Jogpal, IAS was present at the spot when the trial was being conducted. He volunteered to paint a small section on the junction.
Jogpal said with paint, brushes, cones and barricades an intersection could be made attractive and traffic issues like congestion, crash conflicts be reduced. "After the success of the trial, structures will be made permanent," he said.
Haryana Vision Zero programme was launched by chief minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, in May 2017 with an aim to completely wipe out traffic deaths by 2030.
Municipal Corporation Panchkula has a road
safety consultant, while the district administration has a road safety associate.
What is black spot: A black spot, as defined by MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transportation & Highways), is a road stretch of about 500mt where at least five road crashes or 10 fatalities have been witnessed during a period of three years.
At Majri intersection, eight road crashes and three fatalities were reported in the years 2016-17-18. During the same years, 13 crashes and five fatalities were witnessed at Sector 20 lights.
