Motorists frequenting the triangular intersection of Ayyanchery Main Road, Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and GST Road service lanes in Urapakkam have requested the Kancheepuram District Police to take steps to make the traffic lights at the junction functional.
At present, only the amber lights glow at the four traffic-light posts.
The signals functioned only for a couple of days from the date of its installation, which was many years ago, says V. Subramanian, a senior-citizen and a long-time resident of Urapakkam.
The lack of functional traffic signals emboldens some motorists coming from Vandalur to drive recklessly, not slowing down to let motorists from Ayyanchery negotiate through the intersection.
They do the same to motorists from Guduvanchery that take an u-turn at the intersection.
Motorists coming from Ayyanchery Main Road are at risk for accidents when they a right turn at the intersection to enter the western lane of GST Road (towards Vandalur) amidst the flow of vehicular traffic from Nandhivaram.
Due to the lack of a zebra crossing and functional pedestrian signals, pedestrians have no other option but to dart across the road from the eastern lane to the western lane and vice-versa amidst a heavy flow of vehicular traffic or run alongside the motorists that negotiate the intersection.
The junction witnesses an almost-continuous flow of heavy vehicles including container trucks, fuel tankers, and trailer vehicles.
Subramanian says, “Every day, accidents take place at the intersection. Given the volume of heavy vehicles passing through the intersection, steps should be taken at the earliest to make the signals functional.”
