Tulsi lake became the first lake to overflow this year, when it crossed its capacity at 7 p.m. on Friday. Of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, Vihar and Tulsi are the smallest, and usually one of them is the first to overflow every monsoon.

By 8 a.m. on Friday, water level in the lake was 139.10 m, just short of its full supply level of 139.17 m. The level was reached by evening even though the city received just 1.8 mm rainfall.

Last year, the lake had overflowed on July 9. The lake has received 2,020 mm rainfall so far. The city’s total water stock is at 43.92% as opposed to last year’s 44%.
