Assurance in response to Stalin’s question in Assembly

Work on converting the overhead high tension (HT) and low tension (LT) electric cables to underground cables in Chennai will be completed in two years, Electricity Minister P. Thangamani informed the Assembly on Friday.

He was replying to DMK president M.K. Stalin’s question on whether work to convert overhead cables to underground ones, at a cost of ₹2,567 crore, had started across Tamil Nadu. Mr. Stalin said that he had raised the issue on multiple occasions since 2016.

While work had begun in Kolathur and Perambur, it was important to complete it soon since the monsoon was approaching, Mr. Stalin added.

Replying, the Minister said the work was proceeding at a brisk pace in Chennai. “It will take two years to lay a total of 6,532 km of cable — 1,651 HT and 5,281 LT lines. In Kolathur, 3 kms of underground cable laying work has been completed and the work will be completed fully in a year,” Mr. Thangamani said.
