Hrithik Roshan-starrer Super 30 has opened to unimpressive opening day collections of Rs. 11 crore. The biographical drama on the life of Bihar-based mathematician Anand Kumar has done best business in the metros with Mumbai and the south circuits including Tamil Nadu, Mysore, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala bringing better numbers than the rest of the country.
Ironically, the film is facing its toughest competition from Shahid Kapoor’s three-week old romantic drama Kabir Singh that refuses to really slow down.
“Kabir Singh stays strong despite Super 30 making a dent in business," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directed film that made Rs. 2.54 crore on Friday taking its current box office total to Rs. 252.14 crore.
Given that it is set in a small town, trade website Box Office India said it is surprising that Super 30 has not brought in decent numbers even from Hindi-speaking states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and those in central India. Delhi and East Punjab too have ordinary collections.
Box Office India said the Vikas Bahl directed film is looking at the 11th best opening day of the year so far. Even Karan Johar’s romantic comedy Student of the Year 2 had made slightly over ₹11 crore on its first day.
Mired in controversies since allegations of sexual misconduct against Bahl surfaced last year, Super 30 is Roshan’s first release in more than two years. The first day collections are a notch above his last two releases- crime thriller Kaabil and period drama Mohenjo Daro that had made ₹8.02 crore and ₹8.80 crore on their first day respectively. Both, however, had box office clashes to contend with—Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Akshay Kumar’s Rustom.
