Ludhiana : In a rare breast-conserving surgery of a 15-year-old girl, doctors of Ludhiana civil hospital were successful in performing lumpectomy on Wednesday to extract a giant breast tumour measuring 20×10 cm.
Amanjot Kaur, a student of Class IX , GSSS Mundiyan Kalan, noticed a lump in her breast which was had been increasing since three months, and eventually went to civil hospital for treatment. After initial investigation, it was revealed that she had a benign tumour in her right breast which was diagnosed through fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), done to rule out any cancerous growth. Dr Varun Saggar, head of department of surgery, along with Dr Milan Verma, surgeon, successfully removed the tumour and conserved the breast.
Dr Varun while talking to TOI said, “Once preliminary investigations revealed a benign growth, breast-conserving surgery was planned as the size was 20×10cm as show in the sonography and was engulfing the entire breast. Chances of this being phyllodes tumor is high though it is rare in adolescents and only one in 10 are usually malignant. This can only be confirmed by histopathology (microscopic examination of tissue in order to study the manifestations of disease) which is awaited.”

Senior medical officer at the civil hospital, Dr Avinash Jindal, said, “This surgery was done at a charge of Rs 1,000 which is the government fees.”
Amanjot’s father Raghuveer Singh said, “We hail from Munidyan. she was diagnosed at Jain Hospital, from where she was referred to civil hospital. She is feeling better now. She was initially hesitant to tell about the symptoms. We assumed that the lump was due to carrying heavy bags. We decided to take her to the civil hospital for consultation and treatment then as the lump had been growing rapidly.”
