PATNA: In a brazen attack on a police party escorting an under-trial prisoner, a gang of three armed criminals shot dead a constable on the Danapur sub-divisional court premises while trying to set free the undertrial from judicial custody.
The undertrial identified as Mohd Miraj, however, was nabbed within an hour of the attack on the police team, which was deputed inside the court premises to guard the undertrials who are brought for production in various courts.
During the incident, constable Prabhakar Kumar, who was on duty at the court sustained a bullet injury. He was rushed to the government-run Danapur hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was from Purvi Champaran district.
According to Danapur police station SHO Rakesh Kumar Sinha, Miraj was brought to the civil court on Wednesday around 4.30 pm, when three armed men on a motorbike came inside the court premises and fired 5 to 6 rounds targeting the policemen. "The deployed police constables tried to stop the criminals, however, they escaped with one prisoner Miraj, who is accused in altogether 11 cases of loot, extortion and chain snatching," he told this newspaper.
Sinha added: "Miraj was serving in Beur central jail and was produced before the civil court on Wednesday. Prabhakar gave his life in a bid to stop the criminals' escape."

The police also recovered one pistol from Miraj's possession after he was rounded up by the cops in Danapur. The police have yet to identify the three assailants who attacked the police team in the court premises to help the prisoner escape.
"The police are investigating the matter and scrutinising the closed circuit television camera footage installed at court premises. It is matter of investigation whether the assailants came to rescue one or several prisoners," City SP (West) Abhinav Kumar said.
