Nagpur: Bharatiya Janata Party, which claims to be the world’s biggest political outfit, wants to expand more. Upbeat after the recent win in Lok Sabha elections, the party has set a target of enrolling six crore new members taking the tally to 17 crore by August 11 when the drive ends.
“Mahatma Gandhi had said soon after country attained Independence that the Congress party be dissolved. Nehru did not follow that advice. But the ‘nakli Gandhi’ (read Rahul) is now set to fulfil the asli (Mahatma) Gandhi’s wish,” remarked Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The national coordinator of BJP’s Sadasyata Abhiyan Parv (membership drive) was in the city on Thursday to guide the process.
“My party president Amit Shah believes the best of the BJP is yet to come. We have on radar several states like Telangana, AP, Bengal where we stand good chance of having BJP governments. To achieve this, the party wants to enlarge its member base,” said Chouhan. Talking to reporters here, he did not lose the chance of portraying the Congress-led opposition in poor light.
“The Congress ship is sinking and its captain jumped first without waiting to rescue others on board,” said Chouhan referring to Rahul Gandhi’s resignation and unending crisis in the oldest political party. The other opposition parties are also in a disarray.
“In UP, Bua, Babua could not manage to stay together. Mamta didi is desperate seeking help from even old foes like the communists to cling to power,” the former chief minister of MP said. He said the BJP was the only hope for the country’s politics as Narendra Modi was immensely popular and Amit Shah’s strategy worked as dedicated workers implemented his ideas.
“The plan is to add 200 new workers per booth and build a grass roots force that would be the strength of the party,” said Chauhan. Asked about developments in Karnataka and Goa that attracted criticism the BJP was engineering splits to win control in non-BJP ruled states, he said the Congress, which had not been able to keep its house in order, was blaming BJP for its woes.
“There is no one in the Congress to listen to the MLAs. So it is no wonder Congress MLAs in Karnataka and Goa are eager to defect,” said Chauhan. He said the Congress government in MP may also fall, if the situation in the party did not improve.
