WATCH: Queen Elizabeth trades her designer handbag for a spade: 'I can still plant a tree'

Cape Town – Queen Elizabeth isn't afraid to get her hands dirty while doing some gardening.

On Tuesday the British monarch visited the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The 93-year-old who was scheduled to supervise the planting of a hornbeam tree got hands-on as she swapped her designer handbag for a spade.

The Telegraph reports that she was told that she could cover the roots of the tree herself or have someone else do it for her.

To which she responded: "No, no, I can still plant a tree.'"

She then went on to pile on some dirt and then handed the spade back.

As she left, she said: "Somebody's going to have to plant it properly now."

According to The Royal Family Twitter account, King George V and Queen Mary were the first members of the Royal Family to visit NIABTAG in 1921 where Queen Mary planted a Mulberry tree.
