There's not much Steve Smith could have done there to help Glenn Maxwell. He's gone to Jofra Archer - and it's not a pretty dismissal.

I'm not sure what Maxwell was trying to do. It wasn't short, he just prodded at it and it's looped up to cover.

The way he played the ball, he made it look as if it bounced steeply but I don't think it did. Maybe he was waiting for the short one.

Ah yes, it was the slower ball. He was through the shot too early. Well bowled, Archer.

Maxwell and Smith

There's been a bit of tension in the past between Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith, what with Smith's "train smart" comments about him and the like, but Smith is actually a good batsman for Maxwell to have at the other end.

Smith has a way of calming down his batting partner. He was very good for Mitch Marsh during the 2017/18 Ashes when the all-rounder had his best run in the baggy green.

It's worth remembering who was at the crease with Maxwell when he made his only Test century, in Ranchi in 2017. Yep, you guessed it, Steve Smith.

Good call, bad call

This is outstanding commentary by Nasser Hussain on Glenn Maxwell.

"He often plays the shot of the day, Glenn Maxwell, can he play the innings of the day? Something substantial, something special, something of meaning that they'll be talking about in a few years to come, not just that one boundary. That's his challenge. Very talented man, can he win a game with the bat for Australia?"

Red herring

So much for the first ball of the game being a scene setter. David Warner played the perfect cover drive first up to Chris Woakes, then Australia collapsed.

Leading run-scorer

David Warner's dismissal for nine takes him to 647 runs for the tournament, one short of equalling India's Rohit Sharma as the leading run-scorer. Will he get another chance to pass Rohit?

At this stage, it's pointing to no but there's still time for Australia to get back into the game.

Big Show time

Glenn Maxwell's at the crease and my money is on it being chin music time. It's no secret Maxwell has a weakness against short-pitched bowling.

Jofra Archer still has five overs left. It's the perfect time for Eoin Morgan to use two of them on Maxwell while the batsman's new to the crease.

This is the perfect scenario for Maxwell to prove a few of his critics wrong.

It's a double strike by Adil Rashid. He's got Marcus Stoinis trapped in front. Stoinis had no idea there, could not pick the wrong-un.

Kumar Dharmasena gave it a bit of thought before he put the finger up. Stoinis, naturally, did not look happy but he could not review it.

It wouldn't have mattered. Would have been umpire's call anyway.

Australia back in trouble again.

Half-century

That's 50 for Steve Smith off 72 balls - and an important time to bring it up.

The partisan crowd at Edgbaston are giving it to him as well. Australia will need him to bat through the innings to get to a competitive total.

Alex Carey's brave knock has come to an end. Adil Rashid has struck. Carey's come down the pitch and picked out James Vince just inside the deep mid-wicket rope. He needed to eat a few more Weet Bix this morning.

Targets part II

You can add Adil Rashid to the list as well. As a wrist-spinner, he'll naturally give you a few bad balls but if you can ratchet up the pressure you might get a few more. Then again, leggies also have a habit of breaking through. His first four have gone for 29. Australia would want to get 60+ from his 10 overs.
