CHENNAI: Expelled AIADMK
Rajya Sabha member
Sasikala Pushpa has raised an issue over the nomination of
MDMK general secretary
Vaiko to the Upper House.
She has urged Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu not to swear him in as a member of Parliament on "moral and ethical" grounds, citing a one-year sentence he has been awarded by a special court under
sedition charges.
Vaiko was charged by police under Section 124(A) of the IPC (sedition) for a speech he made in 2009. A special court for elected representatives in Chennai last week sentenced him to one-year imprisonment, Sasikala Pushpa said in her letter to the Rajya Sabha chairman.
She also said the one-year imprisonment did not disqualify Vaiko from becoming an MP, since it should be a minimum of two years imprisonment. But she requested the chairman to not to swear him in as a member of the "temple of democracy" on "ethical and moral" grounds.
