Coimbatore City Police have started station-level meetings to improve Hindu-Muslim harmony in communally sensitive places.
The harmony meetings will have the presence of leaders of religious organisations, political outfits, senior citizens, and youth practising Hinduism and Islam.
The initiative was taken after recent arrests of alleged IS sympathisers by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the police.
The meetings will be held in all 15 police stations coming under the four sub-divisions.
The first two meetings were held in Coimbatore west sub-division on Wednesday.
Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan told The Hindu that the meetings were aimed to maintain peace and harmony among the two religious groups.
“We already held separate meeting with leaders of Hindu and Muslim organisations on June 26 which was a success.
We received good feed back from participants of the meetings, who have extended all co-operation in maintaining peace and harmony. Post these two meetings, we decided to convene station-level meetings every week to form Community Liaison Group (CLG) that will work together with the police in building religious harmony,” he said.
Members of the CLG will spread the message of harmony in their religious circles and correct individuals who get involved in activities that pose threat to the communal harmony.
Station-level meeting will be conducted for members from Muslim community on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Similar meeting for representatives from Hindu religion will be held on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
The NIA had busted an IS-inspired module which had alleged plans to conduct terror attacks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The agency had booked six members of the module and two of them were arrested.
Similarly, Podanur police arrested three men who had alleged plans to conduct attacks in places of religious importance in the city.
