Tirupur: A non-governmental organization has called for a detailed inquiry into the alleged sexual harassment of a 25-year-old woman from Odisha by the owner of a private spinning mill in the district.
The victim was working in the spinning mill in Paruvai panchayat near Palladam. She has submitted a petition before collector KS Palanisamy, who in turn had forwarded it to Tirupur sub-collector Shenbagavalli.
Karishma (name changed) of Cuttack district in Odisha was working in the spinning mill on Karanampettai-Karadivavi Road at Paruvai. She was staying with her brother Pramod Mudali, 23, and their relative Sonnu Amantol, 22, in a hostel inside the mill. Pramod and Sonnu were also working in the same unit.
They had joined the spinning mill six months ago for wages of Rs 350 and Rs 450 respectively per day. “But we were given lesser wages than promised for the first three months,” Karishma said. “Even after three months, we were not given wages properly. The mill owner gave only Rs 500-Rs 1,000 at the end of a week.”
“The mill owner entered our room twice when my brother and Sonnu were not available. He made sexual advances to me. The owner, a divorcee, also told me that he was ready to construct a house for me but wanted my brothers to go out of the mill. But we ran away from there,” she said.
Erode Mavatta Pengal Koottamaippu, an NGO, conducted an inquiry into the issue. Secretary of the NGO S Janaki secretary said, “A few more women have faced sexual harassment in the same mill. Those victims have moved out of the mill.”
Director of Rights Education and Development Centre R Karuppasamy said, “Recently, the Odisha government had set up a support centre under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya-Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) scheme in Tirupur. But the centre does not have any scope or authority to address the grievances of the workers who were not enrolled under the scheme. The state commission for women should conduct a detailed inquiry into the sexual harassment faced by Karishma.”
