Need vibrant education to make students industry-ready

BHUBANESWAR: Experts on Wednesday put emphasis on how to make students industry ready soon after they finish their higher education in the colleges or universities of the state. They said this while discussing on the draft National Education Policy (NEP) 2019 at a state-level consulting meeting here.

Higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo attending the meeting said the Centre should increase the allocation for both school education and higher education. Mere 3 per cent will not solve the need of the education sector, he added.

“Odisha has tribals, more than 22 per cent of the state’s population. We should keep their interest in mind while preparing the policy. Equity in education should be a major focus. Besides, the Centre should keep need of the state while preparing the policy,” said Sahoo in the meeting.

Asoka Kumar Das, vice chairman of Odisha State Higher Education Council, said the policy should be prepared in such a way which can bring excellence in higher education. It should focus on how to make students industry ready, he added.

“The policy is a good one. But we will give our necessary comments. Industries should spend their corporate social responsibility fund for the training and research of the state students,” he added.

Siba Prasad Adhikary, an educationist and former vice chancellor of FM University, said the problems related to education sector like teacher vacancy should be solved.

Basudev Bhatta, chairman of Odisha Abhibhabak Mahasangha, put emphasis on increase in allocation for education. CSR funds should be utilised in education. “After completion of study from colleges and universities, there should be a data base of all students to follow up their employment status later,” he added.

Educationists, higher education department officials and vice-chancellors attended the discussion. The comprehensive report about the suggestions will be sent to ministry of human resource development by July 31, said the minister.
