Research indicates that species that diverged along the evolutionary ladder 400 million years ago have conserved epigenetic silencing of some cancer-associated genes during early embryogenesis. The studies also confirmed that while the human epigenome completely resets after fertilization, in zebrafish the paternal epigenomic pattern is retained.
