Sushil Kumar Modi: 24 companies in dock for Rs 840 crore tax evasion in Bihar

Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi
PATNA: Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday said that FIRs would be lodged against 24 companies in the state that have evaded tax worth Rs 840.92 crore by submitting fake bills.
Modi, who is also the minister for finance and commercial taxes, said he has issued the directive in this regard to the commercial taxes department. The tax collections made during the first quarter of the current fiscal were also reviewed on Wednesday.
The 24 erring companies, which have come under the scanner of the commercial taxes department, traded in iron and steel, coal and readymade garments, Modi said.
A scrutiny of their activities revealed that the errant companies had registered themselves on the basis of fake papers, and they indulged in tax evasion by making fake bills. As a result, their activities deprived the state government of revenue earnings worth Rs 840.92 crore, the state finance minister said.
Modi warned that companies that have not filed their returns, but have got e-way bills from outside were also on the radar of the commercial taxes department. They were being identified through business intelligence and action would be taken against them if they were found to be on the wrong side of the law.

As to the state of revenue collections in the last two financial years, Modi said the revenue earnings made in 2018-19 was 26.2% higher than the 2017-18 fiscal, which was a record collection. Accordingly, the target for the current fiscal has been fixed at Rs 29,000 crore.
He said this year, slightly over 2.44 lakh dealers had registered under the GST regime. According to him, officials would make a spot inspection of their business establishments to verify their business activities. The officials who make field verifications would submit the details on the ‘GST Field Visit App’ made by the department.
