TV news
crew on the Barapullah elevated road allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of the Saket courts complex while being taken for a hearing in the case on Tuesday evening. Tayyab Khan shook himself free of the policeman holding him and jumped to the courtyard below.
DCP (south) Vijay Kumar said that the incident occurred around 5pm while Khan was going to be produced before a judge by a team from Sunlight Colony police station. He was an accused in two cases of chain snatching. He was arrested by the Crime Branch last month and sent to judicial custody. He had been taken on a production warrant to be presented in the court to seek a one-day police custody.
Eyewitnesses said Khan suddenly pushed the policeman holding his hand and loosened his grip. When the cops chased him, he ran and jumped over the glass railings. The courtyard was filled with visitors and lawyers at the time of the incident. “I heard a thud and saw a
man lying in a pool of blood. A few policemen and lawyers rushed to help, but he had become motionless by then,” said Yatika Bakshi, a lawyer.
Khan was taken to AIIMS where he was declared dead on arrival. Police have informed his family members about the incident and his body will be handed over to them after an autopsy on Wednesday.
A resident of Shahdara, Khan used to earlier work in a sewing machine factory at Gandhi Nagar. He soon came in touch will other criminals and started committing petty crimes. He was first arrested in 2017 for stealing a car in Krishna Nagar. Later, he and his 5-6 accomplices started robbing people travelling at night in autos, taxis and private vehicles.
He was already in jail after being caught for committing another crime in Daryaganj when he was arrested by the Crime Branch. During interrogation, he admitted to having fired at the TV news crew. Subsequently, an attempt to murder charge was slapped on him.
An inquiry under Section 174 of CrPC has been initiated into the incident. Disciplinary action has been initiated against the policemen who were accompanying Khan.
