They had one job: Hilarious labelling mix-up at Woolworths as staff place butternut pumpkin stickers on their cabbages

  •  The photo posted to Reddit showed a dozen of falsely labelled cabbages
  •  Many criticised the mistake saying the staff were often confused over items
  •  Others said Woolworths should provide better training for employees

Woolworths has been caught out for an embarrassing blunder after customers noticed they had incorrectly labelled some of their produce.

In an image posted to Reddit on Tuesday, multiple cabbages were wrongly labelled as a completely different type of vegetable, butternut pumpkin.

Many voiced their opinion online, criticising the supermarket giant for the obvious mistake.

A dozen half cut cabbages had all been marked with the wrong stickers and were on display in the fruit and vegetable aisle.

'Corporate Australia lying to our faces!' the photo was captioned.

Many poked fun at the photograph and shared similar occasions in which Woolworths had confused different types of vegetables.

'I once had to clarify that what I was buying was a beetroot. Hardly exotic or uncommon,' one Reddit user wrote.

'I occasionally come across some checkout staff who can't identify common fruits or vegetables,' another said.

Others claimed that Woolworths needed to be responsible for better training for their staff so mistakes don't occur.

'Woolies needs to improve their training on vegetable identification.'

'What is going on here, did someone switch up the stickers for a laugh?'

Some customers speculated if the false labels meant they were allowed to scan vegetables for cheaper ones when using the self service check out.

'Does that mean I get a free pass if I put the seedless grapes as oranges? Given the people who work there can't tell the difference between a cabbage and a butternut pumpkin,' someone said.

On the Woolworths website half a cabbage is priced at $2.94 while half a pumpkin is $4.00.

A spokesperson from Woolworths told Daily Mail Australia they were investigating the labeling error.

'Cabbage and butternut pumpkin are cut fresh and wrapped in store by our team members each day. We apologise for any confusion caused.'
