Ludhiana: A continuing medical education (CME) session was organised by Sobti Neuro and Super Speciality Hospital on the topic ‘Approach to Critically ill patients’ on Tuesday at Hyatt Regency, Ferozepur Road.
The speaker, Dr Sarika Sobti, anaesthetist and intensivist at the hospital apprised the audience about the patients who require ICU care and how to deal with them.
She said during the talk that a team of doctors including an intensivist, physician, surgeon and trained paramedical staff are required to take care of a critically ill patient. An ICU set up requires full-time availability of beds, operation theatres, emergency room, laboratory, radiology and blood bank. She also discussed how various systems of the body can be affected in a sick patient and how the same can be managed.
Dr Sarika has worked in ICUs at Fortis, Apollo Hospital & DMCH, Ludhiana, discussed in detail step-wise algorithm on ways to prevent further insult to a moribund patient. She briefed the doctors about various ways of assessment and resuscitation in a such patients.
According to her, the most important part of the process was to recognise the patients at the risk of collapse. She said that timely briefing and counselling the patient’s relatives about likely diagnosis, treatment plan and prognosis is a must.
The CME was attended by around 200 doctors from Ludhiana and neighbouring areas.
