SURAT: A nine-year-old boy was hit by a BRTS bus on Udhna-Magdalla Road on Tuesday while he was crossing the dedicated bus track. He was rushed to New Civil Hospital (NCH) where he succumbed during treatment.
According to details, the victim, Arpit Bhagwat, was hit by the 15C bus when he was crossing the road near Prajapita Brahmakumari Marg BRTS by jumping railing fixed on dedicated tracks without noticing speeding bus from the opposite direction. Locals took injured Arpit to NCH.
Immediately after the accident, the driver of the bus, Virendra Pandey, fled from the spot fearing public wrath. In absence of the driver, mob started venting their anger against BRTS officials before arrival of police to being the situation under control.

A BRTS official said, “ The bus was just running at a speed of 39 km/h but the accident happened as the boy wanted to cross the road in hurry without realising the bus from the opposite direction. The driver later reached the BRTS office and presented himself before officials.”
As many as, 44 people have lost their lives and more than 200 were injured in last 30 months since the Surat Municipal Corporation started the BRTS in as many months.
