Rashford warns Reds and City

Watching bitter rivals Liverpool win the Champions League - giving them six European Cups (twice as many as his own club) and “noisy neighbours” Manchester City win the Premier League ensured last season made for painful viewing for Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford.

However, the 21-year-old from Wythenshawe, has sent a warning out to both Anfield and the Etihad for the forthcoming campaign.

The Mirror quote Rashford as saying:

“That just makes it an even bigger challenge to us.

“We never shy away from a challenge and we have to move forward as a team. The mood now is how it should be, everyone is positive. Last season wasn’t good enough.

“But we’re in much better condition then we were this time last year.”

It was party time for Liverpool ace Roberto FIrmino and his former Anfield team-mate Philippe Coutinho after their national team’s triumph over Peru.

Reds 'ready to pay £67m for Asensio'

Liverpool are ready to pay £67m for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio, according to El Desmarque.

It is claimed Jurgen Klopp fancies the Spain international who has struggled to establish himself as Real Madrid’s next Galactico, despite being a regular at international level.

He is likely to find his chances next season diminished by the arrival of Eden Hazard from Chelsea.

Reds want to keep Origi 'to save £100million'

Liverpool want to keep hold of Divock Origi in order to save the club up to £100million on a potential transfer fee.

That’s the verdict of former England striker Paul Mariner.

The Reds are reportedly keen to hand their Champions League final hero a new deal after he entered the final 12 months of his current contract.

The Express quote ESPN FC pundit Mariner as saying:

“Look, to me he’s a squad player.

“When he first came to the club I thought he was going to bust it wide open, I really fancied this lad a lot.

“It hasn’t really panned out for him, he’s 24 years of age now and those are not great stats.

“But what he did was he came in and scored some very important goals.

“I think what’s going to happen here is that Klopp’s decided that he’s got his main guys and unless they go down badly then Origi can sort of just step in.

“That’s the thinking behind it because if he goes into the market for a striker nowadays, at the level that Liverpool are at, we’re talking £70m, £80m, £100m.

“So maybe that’s not the way he wants to go.

“Maybe he wants to keep him in the squad, he knows what he’s got.

“Origi’s developing under Klopp, hopefully, and he will sort of grow into the roles.

“Whether that comes to fruition, I’m not quite sure.

“He needs to get more time, whether he does get more time is for us to wait and see.

“But he needs to get those assists and goals, it’s nowhere near enough for a centre-forward.”

Reds 'step up chase for Junior Firpo'

So says a report from Spain.

Following Alberto Moreno’s exit, Liverpool of course now need cover for Andy Robertson but while the Scotland captain has proven a bargain buy for Jurgen Klopp, identifying a suitable understudy may prove costly.

Mucho Deportivo - via Sports Mole - reckon that the Reds have identifying Real Betis’ Junior Firpo as a possible target but were reluctant to pay his €50million release clause.

However, the Spanish outlet claims that they have now increased their interest again and are currently the frontrunners for his signature.

Back on June 24, our very own Paul Gorst wrote:

“The ECHO understands the Santo Domingo-born Firpo is not on the Reds’ radar and has not been discussed by manager Klopp or sporting director Michael Edwards.”

Reds track 'The Iranian Messi'

Isn’t it great how any half-decent player from another football nation is dubbed the “xxx Messi”.

Personally I used to like Gheorghe Hagi’s moniker of “The Maradona of the Carpathians” but across Stanley Park, Evertonians’ nickname for Mark Pembridge as “The Merthyr Maradona” was obviously with a tongue firmly in the cheek.

Anyway, in a surprise rumour, Liverpool have been linked with Zenit St Petersburg attacker Sardar Azmoun - known as “The Iranian Messi.”

Soviet Sport - via Sports Mole - take up the story.

The 24-year-old was heavily linked with a switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January, only for that transfer to break down due to the fee being demanded by Rubin Kazan.

The forward’s valuation has only risen over the past six months as a result of nine goals being netted from 12 league appearances for Zenit.

Good morning

Hello everyone and welcome to today’s Liverpool Live Blog.

I’ve just got back from Istanbul where I’ve been checking out the city that Liverpool be visiting next month for the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea and paying a visit to Vodafone Park where the match will be played - more on that later.

The Reds of course return to action for the first time since their Champions League final triumph against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow when they make the short trip ‘Across the Water’ to face Merseyside neighbours Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

So there’s plenty to discuss as we start cranking things up ahead of the new season. Stick with us throughout the day.
