Police have launched one final effort to find an elderly woman who vanished more than three months ago.

Mary Nix, 69, was last seen on April 1 in a post office in Bassendean, Perth, Western Australia, with officers embarking on one last search for her on Wednesday.

After three months of attempts to find Ms Nix, police will call off the search on Thursday afternoon.

If the last-ditch attempt to find her is unsuccessful, she will then become one of hundreds of cases on the WA Missing Persons Unit.

Ms Nix, who was a widow and had no children, was reported missing by neighbours on April 3, after they noticed her dogs hadn't been fed.

Ms Nix's burnt orange Chrysler PT Cruiser was found by police a week later in Bindoon, 70km from where she was last seen, prompting them to launch an immediate search.

The search went for two weeks involving SES volunteers and members from the police air wing.

On Wednesday, 75 police officers will scour the area of Bindoon where Ms Nix's footprints were last found (pictured)

Ms Nix's cousing Tammy Page said in a statement that it was out of character for her to leave, saying her dogs 'were like her children'.

'We are very, very worried about where she is, it's very important that we find her,' she said.

During Wednesday's last attempt 75 police officers including some on horse back and some from the specialist Regional Operations Group scoured the area of Bindoon, where Ms Nix's footprints were found, as reported by Channel 9.

Ms Nix's family are desperate to receive closure over the whereabouts of her body but don't expect to find her alive.

The search will continue on Thursday morning but will cease by the afternoon.

Emergency services will call off the search on Thursday afternoon and Ms Nix will be added to the Missing Persons Unit
