'She wouldn't have lasted another day': Starving dog named Ava is found lying inside a home and unable to stand on her own

  • Inspectors who found a malnourished say she was lucky to be found still alive
  • Ava was found at a property and was so malnourished she couldn't stand or walk
  • RSPCA vets said she was one of the most severely emaciated dogs they'd seen

Inspectors who found a dog that was so malnourished she couldn't stand or walk say the distressed pet wouldn't have survived another day.

Ava was found at a property in North Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, on June 27 after a tip-off from a member of the public.

'If our inspectors hadn't been alerted to her condition, it's likely she wouldn't have lasted another day,' an RSPCA spokesman told Daily Mail Australia.

Police assisted the RSPCA in retrieving Ava, which happened just in time as she was one of the most malnourished dogs they'd ever come across.

Ava was found so weak that she couldn't even stand or walk without assistance.

'It's highly likely she would have died if the seizure didn't happen when it did,' the spokesman said.

'The vets said she was one of the most severely emaciated dogs they’ve ever seen.'

The dog has since been hospitalised and the veterinarians are hopeful she will be able to make a full recovery.

'In the two weeks she’s been in our care she’s made remarkable progress and has already put on three kilos,' the spokesman said.

An investigation surrounding Ava's horrific condition is still continuing, with inspectors likely to commence proceedings against those responsible in coming weeks.

The RSPCA say it's 'disheartening' to think that people could let animals reach the point of starvation.

'We don’t know when she will be available for adoption but it could be a while,' the spokesman said.

'We need to track down the owner and charge him first but also her condition means that she needs constant veterinary care for a few more weeks.'
