Passengers face delays at Sydney international airport after fire

Travellers flying out of Sydney might face delays after passengers were evacuated from the international airport following a fire near the security screening area.

Aviation firefighters extinguished the fire at the Terminal 1 passenger screening area on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was caused by a lithium battery, which sparked a blaze and filled the shopping area with smoke.

An Airservices Australia spokesperson said the evacuation could cause delays and advised passengers to check with their airlines for flight updates.

A Sydney Airport spokesperson said processing has since recommenced at the terminal.

Fire and Rescue NSW was not required to respond.

In Australia, spare batteries and power packs must be packed in carry-on baggage.
