NEW DELHI: Police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the murder of a central government employee last Saturday with the arrest of his
wife, a minor
son and a youth from the neighbourhood. The cops believe the mother and son hired two youths and paid them Rs 1.5 lakh to
kill the man because they were fed up with his alleged ill-treatment of them and wanted to ‘live in peace’.
Anand Kumar Singh (43), employed at the Directorate General of Audit Central Expenditure office in Indraprastha Estate, lived with his younger brother, wife and three children — two sons aged 16 and 14 and a daughter aged 15 — in south-east Delhi’s Jaitpur.
Singh’s brother had dialled 100 around 5am on Saturday after the discovery of the murder. Police sent the body for autopsy, and the medical examination determined the man had been stabbed to death.
Police weren’t convinced when the family members claimed not to have heard any commotion despite being in the house at the time of the murder. Sunita Devi (36), Singh’s wife, stated that her husband, who usually came home around 7.30pm daily, hadn’t returned till 11.15 pm on the night of his murder. She claimed that they had phoned him, but he hadn’t replied.
Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (South-east), said on Tuesday, “Members of the family said they went to sleep after that. Sunita claimed that she woke up around 3am to go to the bathroom and found her husband lying in a pool of blood in his room. She aroused the rest of the family and also called other relatives.” Devi alleged that her husband’s mobile phone and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash were missing from the house.
However, when questioned by the cops, the wife and older son gave conflicting versions. When they were confronted with their differing versions, Devi broke down and confessed to the crime. She said her husband was an alcoholic and often beat her and the children. Therefore, she and her son contacted a neighbour named Vikas, promising to pay him Rs 1.5 lakh to kill Singh. Vikas roped in a friend named Rishabh alias Shibbu for the task.
On July 5, Vikas and Rishabh came to the house and Devi hid them on the terrace. Singh returned home around 11.30pm, allegedly drunk, and went to sleep without having dinner. According to Devi’s confession, around 2.30 am, when everyone was asleep, she and her son signalled to Vikas and Rishabh, who went into the room and stabbed Singh a number of times on his back while the mother and son kept watch. After ensuring Singh was dead, Vikas and Rishabh fled from the house.
Police arrested Rishabh from Faridabad, while Vikas is being tracked. The missing mobile phone has been recovered. The juvenile son has been sent to a reformation home.
