KOLKATA: The
Enforcement Directorate on Monday interrogated senior Trinamool Congress leader and former minister
Madan Mitra for over two hours at the agency’s CGO complex headquarters in Salt Lake for his alleged role in the
Rose Valley scam. Mitra recently contested the
Bhatpara assembly byelection, which he lost to BJP MP Arjun Singh’s son Pawan.
This is the first time Mitra has been questioned by a central agency after his release from prison in September 2016, having spent 22 months in custody. Mitra was arrested by the CBI in December 2014, seven months after the SC ordered CBI to probe the
Saradha scam.
This was also his first interrogation in the Rose Valley scam and particularly for his alleged links with Rose Valley boss Gautam Kundu, who is also in prison. Mitra appeared at the CGO complex around 11.30 am and left around 3 pm. He refused to talk to reporters. After his recent loss in the Bhatpara bypoll, he had uncharacteristically questioned the state government’s move to deny him parole 43 times, once for even casting his vote in 2016.
