  • Congress Legislative Party meet today

    Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah has called from the Legislative Party meeting.

    The party has issued a whip ordering all its MLAs, including those that have submitted their resignation, to attend the meeting in Bengaluru.

    It remains unclear if the rebel MLAs from the party will attend the meet as they are on their way to Goa, from Mumbai.

    All eyes will be on the Assembly Speaker as he returns to his office today. He will be taking a crucial call on the resignations submitted by the 13 MLAs. This will play a key role in how the situation could playout going forward.

    Earlier, the Speaker had promised to initiate the process on Tuesday (today) after speaking to all MLAs. It remains unclear if the Speaker will be able to communicate with the rebel MLAs.

  • Congress petitions Speaker to not accept resignations of 13 MLAs

    Karnataka Congress' legal department has petitioned the Speaker, requesting him not to accept resignations of 13 Congress-JD(S) legislators, alleging that rules have not been followed during its submission.

    It requested the Speaker Ramesh Kumar to take a final decision only after holding separate inquiry with MLAs and hold hearings to gather public opinion of the constituency they represent.

    CM Dhananjaya, chairman of the KPCC Legal and Human Rights department, in a letter to the Speaker, said the MLAs have not submitted their resignations in accordance with the constitution and legislative assembly rules.

    "They have to submit the resignations to you (Speaker) in person," it pointed and alleged that the legislators have not resigned "voluntarily". (PTI)

  • Karnataka political crisis resonates in Lok Sabha 

    The Karnataka political crisis also echoed in Parliament where the government denied any role in the political turmoil even as Congress accused it of hatching a conspiracy.

    In the Lok Sabha, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the resignation drive was started by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

    "Big leaders of Congress are resigning," he said.

  • 14 MLAs leave Mumbai for Goa

    Fourteen MLAs of the ruling JD(S)-Congress government in Karnataka today left for Goa as the scene of action on the fate of the Kumaraswamy-led regime shifted to the coastal state.

    The MLAs, including 10 of Congress, two of JD(S) and two Independents, left for Goa in the evening and are being accompanied by Mohit Bhartiya, president of the Mumbai BJP Yuva Morcha, sources said. They are expected to stay at a resort in Goa, sources said. (PTI)

  • Another Independent Karnataka Minister resigns, supports BJP

    Karnataka Minister and Independent MLA R Shankar Monday resigned from the H D Kumaraswamy cabinet and extended support to the opposition BJP.

    Shankar met state Governor Vajubhai Vala and conveyed his decision to support BJP, a communication from the Raj Bhavan said.

    The Ranebennur MLA, who quit as Municipal Administration Minister, later left for Mumbai.

    With Shankar's decision, the BJP's numbers in the 224-member assembly has gone up to 107 while the strength of the ruling coalition has come down to 116 excluding the Speaker. The half-way mark is 113.

    If the Speaker accepts the resignation of the 13 MLAs, the government numbers will fall to 103. (PTI)

  • Youth Cong workers protest at hotel hosting rebel Karnataka MLAs

    Youth Congress workers brought two horse-drawn carriages outside a suburban hotel where several Karnataka MLAs are camping and protested against the BJP's "horse trading", which it said, had led to the crisis in the alliance government in the southern state.

    The workers, numbering more than 200, shouted slogans against the BJP and demanded that the MLAs take back their resignations.

    As part of the protest, they brought two horse-drawn carriages outside the hotel and accused the BJP, the main opposition party in Karnataka, of indulging in "horse trading". (PTI)

  • I have no fear: CM HD Kumaraswamy

    In his first comments after 13 MLAs resigned and plunged  the Congress-JDS coalition government into a crisis, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy earlier today asserted he has "no fear" about the "political developments" and was concentrating on fulfilling his responsibilities.

    Kumaraswamy, who returned from his 10-day long US trip on July 7 night, was talking to reporters at the state secretariat after holding discussions with officials and farmers' representatives regarding revival of a sugar factory in Mandya.

    "I have no fear about the political developments, I will not discuss about the political developments... I have nothing do with what BJP people are doing and what others are doing," he said.

    Kumaraswamy added: "In the current situation, I have the responsibility of governing the state, my attention is towards fulfilling that responsibility. I have not paid any attention to political developments, there is no such need for me." (PTI)
