Pune: Catchments of Panshet see heavy rain spells

PUNE: Heavy spells of rains continued in the catchments of Panshet dam which is among the four reservoirs that supply water to the city.
In 24 hours ended on Saturday morning, Panshet's catchments recorded 41 mm rainfall. The dam since June 1 has received over 606 mm rainfall. Water stock in dam was up to 2.44 TMC on Saturday morning which was 23% of dam's total storage capacity.
Besides Panshet, good spells of rain were recorded in remaining three dams in Khadakwasla irrigation circle - Temghar, Varasgaon and Khadakwasla. Temghar received 80 mm rainfall. Varasgaon and Khadakwasla recorded 41 mm and 25 mm rainfall respectively.
Located about 40 kms from Pune, Panshet has maximum storage capacity of 9.15 TMC, is key dam to meet water demands of city and rural parts of Pune district. Water released from dam flows in to Khadakwasla dam and then it is released for the city.

Officials in the state irrigation department said that Panshet's storage had reached to maximum capacity in last three consecutive years as dam receives over 1500 mm rainfall during monsoon.
Officials said that most dams around Pune have witnessed good spells of rain in last one week. Water storages are up in almost all reservoirs, they said.
