Sylvester Pradeep, Joel Rozario and Snehal Pinto are the Sylvester Trio. An easy bonhomie emanates from them and that is reflected in their music.
“Though we became a band only in 2016, we have known each other for around 15 years. One of us comes up with a riff and all of us add to it. Before we know it, we have a cool sounding song. This has been true of all our songs. That is the beauty of our band,” says Sylvester, lead guitarist and vocalist.
Snehal, the bassist, chips in: “Our songs stem from stories around us. We believe in creating honest music and that comes from writing reactively to current events. Their original intention, according to Snehal, was to only play a small Jimi Hendrix tribute. However, the fun they had jamming, made them realise they could do more.
“It takes time to structure a song and we put a lot of thought into what we want to say and how we say it. Even if it is something we believe in, it needs to connect with our listeners too. So, we make songs that are not aesthetically compromised, and at the same time, reaches all kinds of people,” says Sylvester.
“Like a road test, we take our songs to a gig and gauge audience reaction. Sometimes what thrills us doesn’t thrill them and vice versa,” says Snehal, while Joel, the drummer and backing vocalist, adds, “That is when we tweak our music, taking their perspective into consideration.”
Sylvester is happy that they had other city-based musicians playing their songs during the launch. There was Michael Dias from Mad Orange Fireworks, Rahul Thomas and Melvin Manoharan on the horns, John Melvin and Ashwin Alexander with percussion. “They added freshness and flavour to our songs,” he adds.
Their album has a Tamil song titled ‘Puvamma’. “People tend to stick to whatever they are comfortable with,” he feels. “This song encourages them to try all kinds of music.”
Each song in the album is unique. While ‘Puvamma’ is a dappankuthu number, ‘Dear Jimmy’ is instrumental and everyone who has loved and lost will relate to ‘Two Fools’.
Though they are busy planning tours, the Trio can’t wait to head back to the studio and record again, staying true to their title,‘there will be more.’
