Six persons, including the son of Ariyalur DMK union secretary, on Tuesday were arrested on the charge of murdering a PMK functionary’s associate.
Sources said a group of persons armed with weapons attacked S. Saranraj, 28, of Chettikuzhi near Thirumanur, at Kallur on Monday night. The victim, a supporter of PMK functionary Karunanidhi of Arungal, died on the spot. The gang then fled the scene. Saranraj’s body was sent to Ariyalur Government Hospital for postmortem.
Keezha Palur police, which registered a case against 12 persons, arrested six and produced them before a Judicial Magistrate in Ariyalur. They were remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.
Poovarasan, son of Ariyalur DMK union secretary Jothivel, was among those arrested.
Police said there was previous enmity between the supporters of Jothivel and Karunanidhi over an election issue and village festival. They are on the look out for Jothivel and five others.
