The Nagpur University's decision to include a chapter on RSS's role in nation-building in syllabus of second year BA (History) course has stoked a controversy.

Earlier, the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University announced that it will include the history of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its role in 'nation-building' in the second year BA(History) course. The topic will be taught with topics of Quit India movement and India's freedom struggle, the university said.

The Congress on Tuesday objected to the university's decision saying RSS has always been anti-Constitution and has not played any role in India's freedom struggle, hence, including a chapter on RSS is nothing but BJP's strategy to impose RSS's ideology in education.

Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan said, "What is RSS's contribution in India's freedom struggle? This is being done to just propogate RSS's ideology."

In a statement, the Maharashtra Congress said that if the University wants to teach about RSS then it should also tell students why RSS was banned three times in the past.

Countering Congress's charges, the BJP said the Congress misused its power and banned RSS in the past. The saffron party said that Congress is challenging the University's decision as it can't accept anyone is power apart from one family.
