Mohali cops run out card data thieves at 60

MOHALI: A Class VIII dropout and his accomplices made Rs 20 lakh to Rs 22 lakh by cloning ATM cards in 60 cases in the district, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said on Monday after police arrested the kingpin and his two members.
The three accused are Sahil, Jatinder Kumar and Upinder Kumar, all residents of Jind, Haryana. Two other gang members are yet to be arrested.
Upinder, the kingpin, was skilled in using and operating the card cloning devices. The SSP said they have confessed to have committed frauds in Mohali, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar, Patiala and parts of Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh.
The SSP said, “Cybercrime DSP Rupinderjeet Kaur and her team worked out the cases following the trail of the accused caught on CCTV cameras of various ATM booths from where the money was withdrawn. Connecting the footage, the cybercrime cell team traced and arrested the accused.”
The DSP said police recovered a Bluetooth-enabled skimming device, an ATM card writer, 18 fake ATM cards, an I-pad and a Maruti Swift car from the accused. They used the car to flee after committing the crime, she said.

The DSP said Mohali police have worked out 60 cases registered at various police station across the district while the accused have confessed to have committed over 100 such crimes.
In August 2018, the cyber-crime unit of Mohali police arrested a seven-member gang accused of cloning ATM cards using skimming devices. They were identified as Mahesh, a resident of West Bengal, Karun Inderpal, a resident of Agra, Rahul Sharma, a resident of Mumbai, Arun, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, Sumit Kumar, a resident of Lucknow, Shourav, a resident of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh and mastermind Gaurav Verma, an MA in yoga.
