PATNA: Health minister
Mangal Pandey on Monday assured the state legislative council that the government will take action against Dr Vijay Kumar of PMCH, if allegations against him are found to be true.
A three-member committee is investigating the charges levelled by junior doctors on Kumar, who was removed as the head of orthopaedic department late Sunday night on allegations that he prescribes medicines of a particular pharmaceutical company to patients and failed some of the PG students for not following his instructions.
While replying to a question raised on this issue in the Upper House, Pandey said the doctor was removed from the post and action will be taken against those found guilty. “The investigation team consists of head of surgery department Dr NP Narayan, head of medicine department Dr MP Singh and
obstetrics and
gynaecology department head Dr Chander Kiran,” he said.
Congress MLC Prem Chandra Mishra demanded adjournment of the House over the issue. He said the accused doctor not only used to prescribe medicine of Medlife, but had also been given a chamber to a medical representative of that particular pharmaceutical company inside PMCH. “He used to check the prescription and if medicine of any other company was prescribed, he used to get it cancelled,” Mishra alleged.
He also alleged similar loopholes in gynaecology department where he said
calcium tablets and injections of a particular pharmaceutical company were given three times the required dose, which was posing a risk to women’s health.
“Similar things are happening in other government hospitals where medicines approved by the government are not prescribed. Such kind of corruption is taking place right under the nose of the government and is dangerous for human life,” he said.
The matter came to light after junior doctors of PMCH went on strike on Friday in solidarity with the five PG students of orthopaedics department who could not pass their examination. The doctors alleged they were intentionally failed because they disobeyed Dr Kumar and did not prescribe the medicines of the company of his choice.
