Puducherry: Rowdy, his aides sustain injuries as crude bomb they were making explodes

PUDUCHERRY: A rowdy sustained severe injuries in his upper and lower limbs and chest when the crude bomb he was making along with his aides exploded accidentally on Monday night in the union territory. Two of his aides sustained minor injuries in the explosion.
The rowdy was identified as Ravi alias Ravi Varma alias ‘Bomb’ Ravi while aides were identified as Dhanasegar alias Saran and a 17-year-old minor boy. Ravi and Dhanasegar hail from Nellikupam, Cuddalore district. The duo settled in Villianur, Puducherry a year ago.
The three people have been admitted at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) after undergoing first-aid treatment at a private medical college hospital. Police booked them and other members of the gang under sections 3 and 4 of the explosive substances’ act and sections 286 and 338 of the indian penal code and launched a hunt for the absconding members of the gang.
The explosion came to light after the private medical college and hospital staff members alerted the police on Tuesday that three people with burn injuries have approached the hospital for treatment. By the time a police team reached the hospital the three were referred to Jipmer for advanced treatment. The team members reached Jipmer and on inquiries found that the gang led by Ravi was making crude bombs when a bomb exploded injuring Ravi and two others.
Meanwhile, a police team led by senior superintendent of police (law and order) Apoorva Gupta and superintendent of police (west) B Ranganathan visited the explosion site behind a cricket stadium in Thuthipet on Tuesday morning. A bomb squad, which accompanied the team, recovered two crude bombs from the explosion site. The forensic experts combed the crime scene for vital clues and collected the remnants of the exploded substances.
Initial inquiries revealed that the gang led by Ravi was making crude bombs to attack the members of the opposite gang. Ravi and others were accused of murdering a member of the opposite gang a year ago. He along with others came out on bail. His close associate Sugan was involved in three murders. Sugan has been lodged at the Puducherry central prison.
