If you’re happy and you know it, you don’t have to clap your hands as Jaguar Land Rover is researching new technology which can determine your mood.
According to automaker, they’re looking into artificial intelligence technology, which uses a driver-facing camera and biometric sensors, to determine a driver’s mood and then automatically adjust vehicle setting to make them more comfortable.
The system monitors facial expressions to help track stress levels and can then adjust the climate control system, ambient lighting and audio system in an effort to make drivers more at ease. In particular, the company said the ambient lighting system could show calming colors if it determines the driver is feeling stressed. The system could also turn on your favorite playlist and lower the temperature if detects signs of tiredness.
Interestingly, Jaguar Land Rover isn’t limiting the technology to front seat occupants. They’re also testing the system on rear seat passengers using a camera mounted in the front headrest. While the front system helps to keep drivers awake, the rear seat system could “dim the lights, tint the windows and raise the temperature … to help an occupant get to sleep.”
The automaker says they’re researching the technology as part of their “tranquil sanctuary vision” to improve the driving experience and “create a sanctuary inside each of its luxury vehicles.” The goal of this vision is to ensure drivers remain mindful, alert and in control, while also making passengers as comfortable as possible.
Jaguar Land Rover says the system will learn a driver’s preferences over time and make increasingly tailored adjustments. The company believes this is important as studies have shown 74 percent of people feel stressed or overwhelmed every day.
