Odd spot

When Scotsman John Irvine was told his carry-on bag was eight kilograms over the limit before a flight home from France, he quickly solved the problem by unpacking and donning the extra kilos of clothes – all 15 shirts and jumpers – as the temperatures outside Nice Airport hovered around 30 degrees.

John’s son Josh reports staff were in stitches, but getting through security was a struggle.

Yesterday's solution was DEDUCTION.

Traffic update

Back to the roads. Several main roads have "had it" according to 3AW traffic reporter Sebastian Cant. The Monash, Western Ring Road and Bolte Bridge are all struggling thanks to earlier crashes. Difficulties getting to Geelong on the West Gate.

Elsewhere:

  • In Blackburn North, there's an accident citybound on the Eastern Freeway at Middleborough Road.
  • In Dandenong North, there's an accident citybound on the Monash Freeway at Stud Road.

Woman arrested after stabbing

A 23-year-old woman has been arrested after a stabbing at Endeavour Hills last night. Emergency services were called to Woodworth Close about 6.30pm. A 30-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The man and woman know each other. The woman is still in custody and is yet to be interviewed, police say.

Cake on a train

But back to more important matters. Commuter Heather Bailie left a cake on a Hurstbridge train yesterday. She tweeted desperately as her by-now possibly well-travelled cake departed the station. By 5pm last night there was still no word at Flinders Street station's lost property office.

Heather has accepted she'll no longer get her cake and eat it too but she'd love her bag back. It was a gift from a friend.

The whole thing got us thinking about lost property and the honesty of people. Have you been reunited with something you lost on a train? We'd like to know. Get in touch via email or Twitter.

Are you feeling the train pain?

Commuters dragged their feet towards buses as a new section of Metro Tunnel works interrupted the Cranbourne, Frankston, Pakenham and Stony Point lines yesterday. An RDO for tradies didn't ease the angst. How's it all going this morning? Share your thoughts via email or Twitter.

And if you're planning on travelling in the next few days, check for interruptions with our handy interactive:

Traffic update

There's a crash now on the Monash. A right lane is closed inbound just after Heatherton Road due to a two-car collision. Elsewhere on the roads:

  • On the Western Ring Road, the left and middle lanes are blocked Altona-bound just after Boundary Road due to a collision. Emergency services are on scene.
  • In Sunshine North, a broken water main is blocking the left lane of Mcintyre Road. Works are not expected to be completed until 3pm. Expect long delays.
  • In Whittlesea, all inbound lanes are closed on Plenty Road due to a collision.

'The sun's still going to come up'

Ashleigh Barty has gone out in style at Wimbledon. She says her crash out of the competition hurt "but it is only a tennis match" and "the sun's still going to come up tomorrow". Watch her press conference at the end of this video from Channel Nine.

'A lot of people want to hurt me'

The 18-year-old man accused of bashing an assistant police commissioner in Melbourne claims he's been targeted with hundreds of death threats.

Isaiah Stephens told Nine News last night "a lot of people want to hurt me". "Honestly I'm just trying to move on from what happened. I don't have a lot to say to the people who've said what they've said."

Isaiah and his brother Jay, 20, are charged over the assault of assistant commissioner Chris O'Neill in the grounds of St Kevin's College in Toorak. He's currently on bail.

Today's top headlines

The Barty party is over. The world No. 1 met her match in the fourth round at Wimbledon last night. American Alison Riske finished off Barty 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in an arm-wrestle of a match that saw the Australian unusually nervy, and her opponent ruthless in taking advantage.

In other news, the ATO is working overtime as people rush to get the $1080 tax offset; a blackmailer pestered a father with dozens of messages about a lost phone as his baby lay dying; and Kevin Bartlett has resigned from SEN Radio after 15 years.
