The resignation of Milind Deora as the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president has triggered a Twitter war between leaders from factions within the party.

After former city unit chief Sanjay Nirupam mocked Deora's resignation, senior party legislator Bhai Jagtap on Monday slammed Nirupam accusing him of "playing politics of caste and language".

Deora, while expressing solidarity with Rahul Gandhi who has resigned as the Congress president, had put down his papers on Sunday to move to the national rung.

Taking to Twitter, Ashok 'Bhai' Jagtap tweeted in Hindi, "Some leaders claim to be Congressmen, but they play the politics of caste and language. They insult other leaders and then contest elections from their territory. But despite all this, he loses by 2.7 lakh votes. Such 'working' leaders need to be careful".

Jagtap has been one of the aspirants for the post of president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee.

He had wholeheartedly supported Deora's appointment as the city unit chief in place of Nirupam before the Lok Sabha elections.

In a tweet on Sunday, Nirupam had questioned Deora if he had stepped down as city chief for climbing up the party ladder.

Nirupam had strongly opposed Deora's suggestion to appoint a three-member committee to oversee the functioning of the city Congress unit till the assembly elections slated for October. He had called it "illogical".

Nirupam on Monday stepped up his attack and weeted in Hindi: "A resignation comes with a feeling of sacrifice. But here a moment later, a 'national-level' position is being sought. Is this a resignation or a ladder to climb up?'' In a tongue-in-cheek remark, he had warned the party on Sunday that it should be cautious of such "hard-working'' people.
