MALDA: Barely a day after the seizure of a huge cache of arms by Border Guard Bangladesh in Shibganj across the International Border with Malda, a Bangladeshi national was shot at by Border Security Force at Baishnabnagar late on Sunday.
The injured man, Md Dulal (20) of Kumargunj village in Shibganj, died in hospital. According to a senior officer of BSF’s South Bengal Frontier, Dulal belonged to a gang of 30-40 miscreants attempting to illegally cross over the border into India.
“Late in the evening, two BSF personnel on duty between Sukhdebpur and Sabdalpur spotted the group of men attempting to cross the border. On being challenged, the miscreants pelted stones at the troopers and then charged at them with sharp weapons. One of the jawans was injured. Finally, when an attempt was made to snatch the weapons of the jawans, one of them opened fire, injuring one person,” an officer said.
While the others fled towards Bangladesh, the body of the dead man was handed over to Baishnabnagar police station for further investigation.

This is the third incident of firing along the Malda border since June. On June 4, a Bangladeshi national was shot dead at Kumarpur as he was attempting to smuggle cattle across the border. He was later identified as Jahirul Sk (31) of Bholaghat, Bangladesh.
On June 21, Manirul Islam, a smuggler from Chapai Nawabgunj, was shot dead by BSF while attempting to cross the IB.
