Kolkata: ‘Gandhigiri’ route to raise awareness

KOLKATA: The traffic cops spent the entire Monday pushing for greater awareness among citizens, using innovative methods.
While the main programme at Kalighat was attended by CM Mamata Banerjee, the most innovative action was witnessed on Prince Anwar Shah Road and in Jadavpur under Jadavpur traffic guard, where school students distributed roses to raise awareness among law-breakers. This ‘Gandhigiri’ is significant because it is from here that helmetless bikers had chased model Ushoshi Sengupta at night while she was returning home and harassed her.

Almost all guards held various programmes, including bike rallies and distribution of helmets. The events were led by DC (traffic) Santosh Pandey. At Ruby crossing in Kasba, an awareness drive for auto drivers was carried out. At Jorabagan traffic guard, students went to petrol pumps and insisted that only those with helmets should be allowed to buy fuel. Sealdah traffic guard officers distributed helmets and conducted awareness drive at Sealdah station.
