Elon Musk Says There Are No Plans For “Refreshed” Model S Or Model X

Earlier this year, a report claimed that was Tesla was planning to launch an updated Model S in September.

While light on specifics, CNBC claimed the “refresh” would likely include an updated battery which would increase the car’s range to up to 400 miles (644 km). That would be an additional 30 miles (48 km) over the current Model S Long Range.

Besides going further than its predecessor, the updated Model S was slated to a receive a revised interior with seats sourced from higher-end versions of the Model 3. The car was also rumored to adopt a more minimalist interior similar to the one used in its smaller counterpart.

The rumored interior changes didn’t sit well with some Tesla fans and it looks like they might be able to breathe a sigh of relief. In response to a tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company isn’t working on a “refreshed” Model X or Model S. He went on to say the company is only planning a “series of minor ongoing changes.” Musk also responded to a follow up question by saying there wouldn’t be an “interior revamp” anytime soon.

Musk’s statement is a bit perplexing as the executive used the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting to say “It won’t be long until we have a 400 mile (644 km) range car.” While that statement seemed to have confirmed the earlier report from CNBC, Musk did suggest a vehicle with that range wasn’t imminent. As he noted, at the time, the extra range would come from “steady improvements that would likely occur in the future.”

This fits in with Tesla’s overall strategy of skipping traditional model year changes and instead making minor updates throughout the year. That being said, we sure some people were hoping for significant changes to the Model S as the car’s design  hasn’t changed much in the past three years.
